Providenciales ("Provo") is the most populated and the territory's tourism hub, home to world-famous Grace Bay Beach; Grand Turk is second and hosts the capital, Cockburn Town. Nationality

Only people with "Turks and Caicos Islander" status (previously called Belongership) can vote or hold government office. Most residents instead hold British Overseas Territories Citizenship, Resident/Permanent Residence permits, or a combination of citizenship and Islander status.

238 square miles (616 square km); highest point 156 feet (48 metres), Flamingo Hill on East Caicos.

Approximately 47,100 as of 2026, spread over nine inhabited islands out of roughly 100 named islands and cays. Corrects the legacy page's outdated 2012-census figure of 31,458.

A non-sovereign British Overseas Territory (colony) with King Charles III as head of state (national anthem: "God Save the King"), represented locally by Governor Dileeni Daniel-Selvaratnam (in office since 29 June 2023). Head of government is the locally elected Premier, currently the Hon. Charles Washington Misick (in office since 20 February 2021), of the Progressive National Party — the other main party is the People's Democratic Movement. Defence and external affairs remain the UK Government's responsibility.

Notable wildlife

The Turks and Caicos Islands Rock Iguana — a large, docile lizard found only here, considered critically endangered — plus several endemic reptiles including the Turks and Caicos curly-tail lizard and the Caicos barking gecko. More at visittci.com.

Food

Conch — breaded and fried as "conch fritters," or served raw as conch salad — is the signature dish, alongside pan-cooked or fried grouper and snapper, and seasonal lobster (August to March).

Geography

Mostly low, flat limestone with marshes and mangrove swamps surrounded by sandy beaches; Middle Caicos and North Caicos have some woodlands and caves. The Turks Islands (Grand Turk, Salt Cay) are separated from the larger Caicos Islands archipelago by the Turks Island Passage, roughly 20 miles (32 km) wide and 5,000 feet (1.5 km) deep.

Brief History

The first inhabitants were Taíno people who arrived from Hispaniola between 500 and 800 AD, later joined by others from Cuba and the southern Bahamas — they lived here peacefully as fishermen and farmers for nearly seven centuries before the Spanish arrived in 1492. British, French and Spanish exploration followed without permanent settlement, until Bermudian salt collectors settled in the 17th century to rake salt from the shallow waters.

In 1841 a Spanish slave ship, the Trouvadore, wrecked near East Caicos; the 192 Africans who survived served as apprentices to the British for a year before being freed. The islands were annexed to the Bahamas in 1799, then to Jamaica in 1874 after the "Great Bahamas Hurricane," and became a British crown colony in their own right in 1962 when Jamaica gained independence.

Today the Turks and Caicos Islands are a leading international investment center for offshore finance, alongside their tourism economy centered on Grace Bay Beach in Providenciales.

🏖 Grace Bay Beach

Often ranked as the best beach in the world. On Providenciales' north coast, part of Princess Alexandra National Park and home to many of the territory's luxury resorts — protected by a barrier reef with great scuba diving. To the west sit Bight Beach and the snorkeling sites of Bight Reef and Smith's Reef.

🏖 Leeward Beach

East of Grace Bay, with no large luxury resorts — quiet and secluded. The channels off its eastern side are ideal for wakeboarding, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding.

🏖 Mudjin Harbour

A top attraction on Middle Caicos — high limestone cliffs, a white sand beach, Dragon Cay, caves and breaking surf create a spectacular landscape reminiscent of Bermuda's bluffs.

🏖 Long Bay Beach

Providenciales' kiteboarding spot — fine white sand and shallow turquoise water stretching for miles across the Caicos Banks, with trustworthy trade winds and great conditions for beginners and pros alike.

🏖 Half Moon Bay

A beach and sand-bar lagoon between Water Cay and Little Water Cay — the number one boat excursion destination in TCI, home to the Turks and Caicos Rock Iguana and a picturesque shallow lagoon.

Caribbean Tip of the Day

Packing for the Caribbean? You can really get away with the minimum. Fashion. Bring light sundresses, shorts, T-shirts, sandals and a swimsuit. Although, you can get all of those - plus sarongs and sunscreen - on the island too. Jackets, jerseys, long sleeves and long pants are only sometimes worn on islands that get cooler in winter time, like The Bahamas. But in general, even fine diners are seen wearing Bermuda shorts and sandals, and sundresses for women. Guys wearing white shorts with Caribbean color belts are seen a lot.
